The Family Safety Care program is designed to equip family members and other stakeholders with essential skills to improve behaviour and manage potentially dangerous incidents in a home or home-like setting. This innovative course provides an adapted version of the Safety-Care curriculum, specifically tailored for families. The curriculum consists of four 2½- hour sessions, covering the following topics:

Course Outline

  1. Collaboration with Professionals:
    • Understanding the role of professionals in supporting behaviourally challenging individuals.
    • Legal responsibilities and ethical considerations.
  2. Understanding Challenging Behaviour:
    • Identifying triggers and patterns of challenging behaviour.
    • Strategies for prevention and de-escalation.
  3. Creating a Supportive Environment:
    • Designing a safe and nurturing home environment.
    • Promoting positive interactions.
  4. Safety Habits and Caregiver Behaviour:
    • Teaching safety routines and habits.
    • Effective communication and reinforcement techniques.
  5. Development of a Comprehensive Family Safety Plan:
    • Assessing risks and vulnerabilities.
    • Creating a personalized safety plan for emergencies.
  6. Advanced Skills (Physical Techniques):
    • Techniques for managing crisis situations, including protective shuffling, wrist releases, and more.
